What We Do

Humane Investigations

Lake Humane Society protects animals in Lake County through our Humane Investigations Department. Our humane agent is appointed by the LHS Board of Directors and sworn in by the Lake County Probate Judge. They work alongside local law enforcement to investigate and address cases of animal cruelty and neglect.

In Ohio, humane agents are authorized to enforce state animal cruelty laws. However, the LHS humane agent’s authority is limited to Lake County.

Like all LHS programs, Humane Investigations operates solely on donations—we receive no government funding. The costs of investigations, equipment, legal fees, and staffing depend entirely on community support.

What You Can Do

Hours of Operation: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
We do not provide after-hours or emergency response. If you witness an urgent animal-related crime, contact your local police department immediately.

If you observe a violent animal crime or a situation requiring immediate intervention, call your local police department. By law, our humane agent cannot respond in an emergency mode. Law enforcement plays a critical role in ensuring prompt action to protect animals. Our humane agent collaborates closely with all Lake County law enforcement agencies.

Please note: Our humane agent does not respond to nuisance complaints such as barking dogs or stray animals.

Cruelty to Companion Animals

A “companion animal” means any animal that is kept inside a residential dwelling and any dog or cat regardless of where it is kept. “Companion animal” does not include livestock or any wild animal.
