Volunteer Positions

At Lake Humane Society we have many different opportunities for the members of our community to lend a helping hand. We recommend that our volunteers try out a task to see if they would be a good fit for that role, then work to volunteer in that task on a consistent basis. Below is a brief description of the volunteer positions we have at our facility.

Cat Care and Cage Cleaning

Cat Care and Cage Cleaning volunteers care for our cats by making sure they are in a clean, comfortable environment. These volunteers do so by cleaning cages, feeding the cats, filling up their water bowls, and providing them with cozy bedding. LHS greatly relies on these volunteers to make sure each cat is in the most comfortable environment possible during their time with us. Volunteers must be 16 years or older to volunteer with cats.

The cats living in our shelter greatly benefit from some TLC from our volunteers! Cat TLC volunteers are responsible for socializing our cats to increase the likelihood of adoption. Socialization with cats could include petting, brushing, playing with, reading to, or snuggling. Cat TLC volunteers are also an excellent resource for potential adopters as they know the personalities of our cats well. Volunteers must be 16 years or older to volunteer with our cats.

Dog Walking

A walk with a volunteer can be the best part of a shelter dog's day. Our Dog Walking volunteers are responsible for giving our dogs much needed cage breaks, exercise, and socialization through walking, playing, and TLC. Volunteers must be 18 years or older to volunteer with dogs.

Daily Maintenance Assistant

While this volunteer position does not involve direct contact with our animals, Daily Maintenance volunteers are essential in helping the shelter run smoothly on a daily basis while meeting our animal’s needs. Daily Maintenance Assistant volunteers help with the every-day tasks at the shelter, such as doing laundry or washing dishes. Volunteers must be 16 years or older for this role.

Offsite Event Representative (Major Fundraising Events and Outreach Events)

LHS is looking for friendly and outgoing volunteers with a love and passion for the lifesaving work done at LHS. Offsite Event Representatives act as a liaison between the public and the shelter by promoting our services, programs and events within the community. Volunteers must be 18 years or older to volunteer at offsite events.

Shelter Host/Hostess

Shelter hosts and hostesses are a huge help in freeing up our staff to conduct adoptions. These volunteers greet potential adopters, direct adopters, and answer basic questions while informing adopters about the personalities of our adoptable pets.

Adoption Counselor (On-site and Off-Site Events)

Adoption Counselors are able to be a part of the exciting moment where an adopter meets their new family member! Adoption Counselors go beyond answering basic questions about a pet to actually complete the adoption process. Adoption Counselors assist potential adopters in every step of the adoption process. Volunteers must be 18 years or older for this role and have had experience with other volunteer positions at LHS.

Youth Volunteer Program

Lake Humane Society invites youth ages 7-15 to participate in our Youth Program. The program gives youth volunteers an opportunity to get involved helping the animals at LHS through Cat TLC. Cat TLC includes socializing our cats to increase their adoptability, as well as making the time spent at the shelter more enjoyable for our feline residents. Socialization may include petting, brushing, playing with, snuggling or reading to our adoptable cats. It also gives youth volunteers an opportunity to learn how to properly handle and interact with cats, understand cat body language, as well as an overall understanding of the mission and work of LHS.

All youth volunteers must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to participate in the program. Both the parent or guardian and the youth participating must first attend an orientation session. If interested, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@lakehumane.org for more information, or by phone at (440) 951-6122, extension 109.

For more information on the volunteer program here at LHS, please feel free to contact our Volunteer Coordinator at (440) 951-6122, extension 109 or via e-mail at volunteer@lakehumane.org.
